The waters in and around the Firth of Clyde are internationally renowned as amongst the finest racing and cruising areas in the world. The town of Largs, with its Sailing Club, sportscotland National Centres and Yacht Haven is ideally located as a base for major sailing events.

The resort of Largs has a population of 11,500 and commands breathtaking views of the Clyde and Isles. Largs enjoys excellent communications with two international airports, a container port and the national motorway network nearby
Travelling to Largs from Glasgow by road

Road Links -

  • Driving towards Glasgow on the M74, take the M8 to Glasgow (this means taking 2 exits one directly after the other).
  • Follow the M8 through Glasgow until you reach the exit for Glasgow Airport.
  • Take the exit immediately after the airport exit (Junction 28A), which is the A737 to Irvine.
  • Continue on this for 4½ miles until the road splits, stay in the right hand lane (A737 to Irvine), in 5 miles you will come to a small roundabout, turn right towards Loch Winnoch (A760).
  • Continue on this road, through Kilbirnie (in Kilbirnie town go right at the roundabout and then left).
  • As you approach Largs you will go down a steep hill, for the Yacht Haven/Sailing Club turn left at the traffic lights.

Alternative route: Take the M8, through Glasgow, all the way to Greenock, then follow the coast road (A78) to Largs. This is about 10 miles longer but has slightly more motorway.


Travelling to Largs by Rail

There is a frequent (normally hourly) service from Glasgow Central direct to Largs. For train timetables please consult one of the on-line timetables or for national train enquiries, telephone 084.... The journey takes around one hour
Driving from Glasgow Airport

Glasgow Airport is located to the west of the city and is within easy reach of most places in Scotland. The M8 Motorway via Junction 28 gives easy access to and from the airport. The airport is about 20 minutes drive from Glasgow City Centre and 40 minutes from Largs. See directions (above) for driving from Glasgow to Largs for more detailed information.
Driving from Prestwick Airport

Prestwick Airport is located to the south of the Largs and is about 40 minutes drive from Largs. Go North on the A78 towards Greenock. You will pass turnoffs to Troon and Irvine on route, continue on the A78 bypassing the towns of Saltcoats and Ardrossan, then drive along the coast, still on the A78, through Seamill and Fairlie. Continue on the A78 for about 2 miles and you will see the Yacht Haven immediately before you enter the town of Largs.

From take the A77 North towards Ayr, passing Troon. Go North on the A78 towards Greenock and follow the directions as described in driving from Prestwick Airport (above).
