RS:X World Windsurfing Championships on Facebook

Finals Day 2 Report

A Brighter day today with a building breeze out of the north. The first race run in planing condition with masts forward in the track. The second with mast at the back of the track meaning that the wind was up to 15 knots.

In the men’s fleet, the contenders for the title of 2009 RS:X World Champion have been reduced to two. Nick Dempsey [GBR1] banged in a 2 and a 4. His only real remaining rival Nimrod Mashiah [ISR21] countered with a 3 and a 2. Five points separate them going into the double points medal race tomorrow.

As for the rest, Dorian van Rijsselberge [NED8] picked himself up and dusted off yesterday’s 21 and 23 to post a 9 and a bullet. He is back in third place tonight 20 points behind Nick. His drive for the title is over but there is a glimmer of hope that he can still be RS:X Windsurfing Vice World Champion. It’s a big ask. 16 points is what he needs to make up. Some disaster would have to happen if Nimrod blew that number in one race.

Bottom line, Dorian needs to ensure his bronze by crushing the challenges of the chasing pack.

Byron Kokalanis [GRE8] is just 3 points back and making a late drive for a podium place. Przemyslaw Miarcyznski [POL126] , the King of the Breeze, lost the plot today and slipped from 2 places to 5th having posted a 14 and a 12 five points of the pace.

Joao Rodrigues [POR75] saw his well managed challenge for a top 3 spot falter. His 7th place in race 9 was followed by 15th in race 10 killed any real chance.

Over in the women’s fleet, normal service has been resumed. Marina Alabau [ESP5] posted a pair of 2s to go into the women’s medal race with a 12 point cushion. A pretty invincible lead for the 2009 RS:X Windsurfing European Champion.

The other half of the Spanish Dream Team, Blanca Manchon [ESP1] now takes over 2nd place from Agata Brygola [POL20] who blew her first race of the day. She came back in the second with a 4th place but she is now only 2 points up on Charline Picon [FRA4] who is back in the groove.

Marine Rambaud [FRA50] is 19 points back in 5th.

So Game on. Blanca will be looking to dominate Agata and Charline. Agata and Charline will lock horns and give no mercy. This will a full on high pressure three cornered fight. The Biggest 2 races of the season will not start before 1400hrs. The breeze is forecast to top out at 14 knots one hour beforehand so, if anything, The wind is likely to be backing off.
